For 11 years, the Peachtree City Recreation Department has had the mighty task of easing local children out of summer and back into school.

The annual Last Fling celebration is one last hurrah for both children and parents, filling a Saturday with activities, entertainment, food and fun.

The celebration is at Shakerag Knoll off McIntosh Trail. A train ride for the younger crowd will circle the event. Other rides include a giant slide, a moonwalk and a 24-foot-high rock climbing wall. There is a small fee to use the rock climbing wall, while most of the other attractions and games are free.

There are also some new events at this year's Last Fling. The Atlanta Thrashers will put on a street hockey clinic, with all of the equipment provided. There will also be a laser baseball pitch, determining the speed of your pitches. There is an extra fee for the laser pitch game and half of the profits will benefit the McIntosh Baseball Booster Club.

Freddy the Firetruck and the talking, computerized Police Mobile are expected to make an appearance at Last Fling this year as well. Children can also wander through the Dragon Maze, have their faces painted or make spin art. There will also be some emergency vehicles on hand to give curious kids an idea of how they work.

Another annual tradition is a performance from Rachel Ferguson's cloggers. There will be showcase programs from other dancing programs this year as well. Add to this door prizes, dozens of game booths and a wide array of foods from area non-profit organiztions and you have a full day ahead of you.

“Last Fling is a big, family fun day,” explains Berniece Wassell of the Peachtree City Recreation Department. “The whole community is invited to have some fun before the summer ends and school starts back up again. It is basically a gift from the city.”

Last Fling will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. The rain date is noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13. Volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts during the event. To volunteer some time or to get more information, phone 770-631-2542.
