Paddlers continue to row their way through summer drought

One would think that the drought this summer might put a crimp in the plans of the Peachtree City Paddlers, but that is not the case. The group has continued to hold roll practice on Lake Peachtree, played on local waterways and had successful trips on the Nantahala River this summer. And the fun isn't over yet.

On August 26 and 27, the Paddlers are taking a trip on the Pigeon River, a river that is new to the club. The Pigeon is a little more difficult than the Nantahala River, but not as difficult as the Ocoee.

“It is a forgiving river,” states club President Robert Osborn. “The swims are not dangerous.”

The group will paddle down the Pigeon Saturday and the Nantahala Sunday. The Nantahala is a Class III river and particiapnts should have some river experience to paddle kayaks or canoes, but duckies and rafts are available to rent. For more information on the trip, call John Dennis at 770-487-5888.

Other trips planned for the end of summer and the beginning of fall include a trip down the Hiawassee/Ocoee on Saturday, Sept. 23. and a weekend in Toccoa Oct. 21-22.

The Ocoee is a Class IV River and should be for paddlers with experience, the Hiawassee is a Class I-II run. The Toccoa weekend will include runs on the Toccoa River on one day and either the Cartecay River or the Ocoee on the other day. Call Margo Booth at 770-487-8084 for more information.

The Peachtree City Paddlers hold roll practices every Friday evening at 6 p.m. at Battery Way Park on Lake Peachtree. They are also interested in setting up beginner trips for new members on the Chattahoochee River. If you are interested in becoming a member or participating in any of these events, call Robert Osborn at 770-460-5176.
