Exciting church league season comes to a close

The GRPA 4th District Men's Church Equalizer Softball Tournament was conducted at McCurry park in Fayetteville recently.

An equalizer tournament means that if a team hits a homerun, they cannot hit another until the other team has hit one. If a homerun is hit before the other team has hit one, it counts as an out. The tournament was very exciting, though, with heavily favored teams being knocked out early and games being postponed due to storm-caused power outages.

The Mountain View Baptist “A” team from Thomaston-Upson County suffered its first defeat in two years to Fayette County's Southern Crescent Friday night. Southern Crescent then lost to Clayton County's The Village Church and Carrollton's Old Camp UMC Church, knocking them out of contention.

Mountain View Baptist “A” got back on track Saturday, defeating Royal Baptist of Coweta County 7-6 but eventually losing to Carrollton's Old Camp UMC. Old Camp UMC lost its first game of the tournament to Coweta's Crossroads Number 1. Old Camp went on to win its next three matches and made it to the finals to face The Village Church. The Village Church was undefeated in the tournament so Old Camp UMC would have to win twice to win the tournament.

The first game went into exra innings, but Old Camp emerged victorious with a 7-6 win in eight innings. The second game was much less contentious as Old Camp easily defeated The Village Church 9-2 to become district champions. Both teams will head to the State Men's Church Equalizer Tournament Aug. 4-6 in Augusta.

In other softball news, Fayette County's Flat Creek Baptist Churh will defend its state championship at the men's Church Unlimited Softball Tournament Aug. 4-6 at Valdosta. There is no limit to the homeruns in the tournament and, since Flat Creek Baptist is the returning champion, it did not have to qualify through the district tournament.

Fayette County's New Hope Baptist women's team took second place in its tournament and will head to the state tournament in Lee County Aug. 4-6. `
