Seedlings to be offered by GFC

The Georgia Forestry Commission is now accepting tree seedling purchase applications statewide for the 2000-2001 planting seasons.

Johnny Branan, GFC chief of reforestation, said some species such as longleaf, red cedar, persimmon and crabapple are expected to sell out during July due to an increasing demand and short supply. “But we still have a good supply of slash and loblolly pine, and some hardwoods including dogwood and oak,” he said.

Branan said applications for seedling purchases will continue throughout the current planting season for as long as supplies last. Depending on adequate soil moisture and availability of seedlings, planting season for slash and loblolly can begin as early as mid-November. Hardwoods should be planted in January or February.

Land owners are urged to place their seedling orders early due to the probability of numerous tree species being sold out as the planting season progresses. Any purchaser of GFC seedlings may receive a refund until Nov. 15. All requests for refunds must be in writing and postmarked by Nov. 15.

Branan emphasized that GFC seedlings are grown from certified seed carefully selected and developed for each geographic region of Georgia. Seedlings adapted for specific regions will be shipped based on the county of planting indicated on the purchase application form.

For information on ordering seedlings, price listings and best species for various areas, phone your local Georgia Forestry Commission office (listed under “Forest Fire” on the inside phone book cover), dial 1-800-GA-TREES, or visit the commission web site at www.gfc.state.ga.us.
