Plans
for this year's Founders Day are underway The Tyrone Founders Day Committee is making plans for the 24th annual Founders Day Celebration. Festivities will take place beginning Sept. 9 at Tyrone Elementary School for the annual Sweetheart of Fayette County Beauty Pageant at 11 a.m for children 0-6 years old and at 2 p.m. for children 7 and older. All contestants will receive trophies. Queens from each age group will receive trophies, banners, tiaras, special gifts and rides in the Tyrone Founders Day Parade. Each runner-up will receive a trophy and banner. Winners in the optional photogenic, eyes, face, and banner from each age division will receive a trophy and banner. Entry fees are $35 before Sept. 1 and $40 after. Registration will be taken at the door. Optional categories are $5 each. A dance for middle school will be hosted by the Tyrone Founders Day Committee Friday, Sept. 15 from 7:30 - 10 p.m. at the entertainment tent at Shamrock Park. The 16th annual Founders Day 5K run and one-mile fun walk will be run in conjunction with Tyrone Founders Day Sept. 16. The one-mile walk will begin at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 8 a.m. This USTF-certified course begins and ends in front of Tyrone Elementary School. Awards will be given in the 5K to the first three overall males and females as well as the top three finishers in each age group. For the one-mile walk, awards will be given to the top male and female walker. Ribbons will be given to all walkers who finish the walk. Sept. 16 and 17, Founders Day will kick off with a day of activities for everyone. Applications are now being accepted for booth space for arts and crafts, advertisement, commercial. Each booth space is 12 by 12 and rental is $50 per space. Concession rental is $75 per booth; $15 extra for electricity. This year's theme is From Mother Goose to Dr. Seuss, Children's Classics on the Loose. A $200 cash prize will be awarded to the float judged the best entry based on this theme. The second place finish will win $100 and third will win $50. A surprise visit from Mother Goose will highlight the parade. Applications at Town Hall and on the web site. Saturday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 17 activities will continue with a Kid's Corner complete with activates for toddlers and children on the ball field. Stories with Mother Goose, face painting and a moonwalk will highlight some of the festivities. An art show with children from Tyrone and Burch Elementary will give youngsters a chance to show off their artistic skills, and works will be displayed at the festival site Saturday and Sunday. Back by popular demand, Magic 96.7 and there live remote from Shamrock Park. D.J's will be on hand to give away several items throughout the remote from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Festivities will continue Sunday, Sept. 17 at Shamrock Park with something new and exciting. Calling all cooks! A Taste of Tyrone will be a highlight of the day's activities at 1 p.m. The community is invited to participate by entering recipes. Categories are: (1) Fast and Fabulous Desserts & Treats (2) Casual Snacks & Appetizers. Entries will be judged on taste, appearance and creativity. Two first place winners, one in each category, will receive $25 cash and a plaque. Entry forms must be returned by Sept. 12. The annual Ice Cream Eating Contest sponsored by Mayfield Milk will begin at 1 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for each category. The Tyrone Founders Day Committee is seeking nominations for this year's 2000 Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year and Extreme Teen. Each year the town recognizes an individual in each category who, through personal efforts, has displayed extraordinary service/leadership skills in the quality of life in the Tyrone community by promoting a sense of civic pride. The Senior Citizen of the Year nominations should be based on an individual who is 55-plus and possesses the same qualities as stated above. To nominate an individual for one or more of the awards: 1. List the name and address of the candidate. 2. List each specific accomplishment (What they have done to display extraordinary accomplishments in our community). 3. What was unusual about the nominee's dedication? How much time, energy and skill were required. 4. Who has been inspired or motivated by this person's actions? 5. What were the results from this candidate's action? The Founders Day Celebration will once again offer the midway of Peachtree Rides Thursday, Sept. 14 through Sunday, Sept. 17. Armbands may be purchased for $9 for Thursday and Sunday only.
