Masters swimmers win at regional championship The Southside Seals Masters Swim Team is having its best season yet, as demonstrated by impressive finishes at the USMS Dixie Zone Long Course Championship in Brunswick, Ga. July 14-16. Competing as part of Georgia super team, the Seals were a major factor in the first place finish of Team Georgia along with several new Georgia records. In all, the Seals won seven Dixie Zone individual championships, a new team record for this meet. Carol Welling won the zone championship in the women's 35-39 age group 800-meter freestyle. She added four second place finishes in the 50-meter backstroke, the 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter freestyle, and the 400-meter freestyle, and three third place finishes in the 50-meter butterfly, the 50-meter freestyle, and the 100-meter freestyle. Ken Sharpe won the zone championship in the 50-meter freestyle in the men's 45-49 age group. He also earned second place honors in the 100-meter freestyle, the 50-meter breaststroke, and the 50-meter backstroke. In addition, Sharpe achieved the national qualifying times in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, and the 50-meter breaststroke. Steve Justice won five zone championships and swam six national qualifying times to win the High Point Award in the men's 40-44 age group. Justice won all three backstroke races (50-, 100- and 200-meter), the 100-meter breaststroke, and the 50-meter butterfly. He also finished in second place in the 50-, 100- and 200-meter freestyle races. The Southside Seals is a member club of United States Masters Swimming and is open to adults over 19. Swimmers of all skill levels are welcome, including competitive swimmers, triathletes, and fitness swimmers. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7 p.m. at Kedron Aquatic Center in Peachtree City. |
