Silverbacks and Classics lose in disappointing doubleheader

The Atlanta Silverbacks and the Atlanta Classics played their last doubleheader of the season on Saturday night at Dekalb Memorial Stadium. It was a disappointment for both teams.

The Atlanta Classics (6-4-1) faced the Charlotte lady Eagles and lost by a score of 4-0. Charlotte struck early scoring a goal in the seventh minute and again eight minues later. The two goal deficit forced Atlanta to take some chances and Charlotte scroed twice more in the second half. The Lady Eagles are now in a good position to be named the favorite from the region and head to the W-League Final Four in August.

The Silverbacks also suffered some defensive lapses that cost them the game. They hosted the Raleigh Capital Express and lost by a score of 2-1. “We did not start well and did not go after them like we should have,” stated General Manager Mike Balson. “The Express took advantage of some of our defensive lapses.”

The loss will not hurt the Silverbacks too terribly if they can get wins in their next two games. Atlanta will face the Long Island Rough Riders on July 29 and the Connecticut Wolves on July 30. Both games are on the road.
