Fayetteville
to celebrate with sixth annual July Jam By MICHAEL BOYLAN Main Street Fayetteville will be bustling with activity this Saturday, as crowds gather to enjoy the sixth annual July Jam. July Jam is a day-long festival, featuring arts and crafts, children's activities, food, free stuff and entertainment. The grounds of the County Administrative Complex will be filled with such arts and crafts as stained glass, sterling silver jewelry, watercolors, candles, quilts, birdhouses, silk flowers and hand-painted wood works. As for the kids' activity area, there will be a huge pirate ship and airborne adventure as well as miniature train rides, a giant sandbox, a rock climbing wall and many more games and activities. The public can also enjoy the Jammin' Power Mister sponsored by the Fayetteville Fire Department. Also available at the July Jam, a varsity-style World Gym jacket autographed by Arnold Schwarzenegger will be raffled. The jacket comes courtesy of World Gym Peachtree City. The public is encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to rest comfortably during the day's activities. After a day full of arts, crafts, food and entertainment, find a spot on the lawn in Heritage Park and join a concert under the stars. What you'll hear are the energetic sounds of the Swingin' Medallions. This free concert will be Saturday, July 15 at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Magic 96.7, The Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company, World Gym of Peachtree City, the city of Fayetteville, Fayette County, Arby's and Golden Age Home Healthcare Inc. The Swingin' Medallions are one of the most sought-after `60s groups today. Based out of the Greenwood, S.C. area, their musical style is associated with beach music, R&B and shaggin'. The Swingin' Medallions' musical career began by touring local college campuses before John McElrath took the group to record Double Shot (of My Baby's Love). The song became a million dollar seller in 1966 and continues to draw people to the band over 30 years later. Other top 40 hits include She Drives Me Out Of My Mind and Hey, Hey, Baby. Over the past 30 years the members of the band have changed, with only the leader, John McElrath remaining. However, their original high-energy style continues with the same sound and popularity. The current Swingin' Medallions stage show has coined them the name The Party Band of the South. Opening for the Swingin' Medallions is the popular local band, Slow Children at Play. SCAP began its career in 1995, quickly revising its tunes and creating its own songs. The band has released one CD titled Someone Just Called and Complained, selling close to 1,000 copies, and are on the way to releasing a second CD. The current lineup includes Christian Jolly on vocals and guitar, Don Lambing on bass guitar, Eric Henson on percussion, Chris Haugh on trumpet, Jon Brown on keyboard, Mike Coloney on trumpet and Ryan Haylock on tenor sax. Competing against 300 other bands, SCAP won a contest to open for Stroke 9 on the Freshmaker Tour at Illinois State University and has played at many venues around the Atlanta area. Other musical entertainment during the day includes great local bands such as The Wild Hearts Band, The Justice Blues Band, and Houston Hatchett and The Desert Moon Band.
