Baseball
season nears end for older teams, starts up for younger
ones By MICHAEL BOYLAN Most of the baseball talk these days concerns John Rocker or Sammy Sosa, but on a smaller, and infinitely purer level, local little league baseball has been terrific. Last weekend our local high school teams competed in the Southside Shootout at McIntosh High School. Fayette Gold (Fayette County High School's varsity) took second place in the tournament, losing their only match of the weekend to Shaw (the tournament champions and a formidable 4-AAAA opponent this past spring). The Tigers got wins over the Mavericks (McIntosh's varsity), East Coweta and Mount Zion. The final tournament of the season began yesterday for these teams, but division play in the pony league and the American Amateur Baseball Congress are just starting up. The Newnan 11-12 year olds faced Powder Springs earlier this week and won by a score of 10-1. Newnan built up a 3-0 lead before Powder Springs recorded an out against them. Wes Moore and Chris Bonner each had six hits as Newnan built up an 8-0 lead by the top of the third inning. Oliver Turner and Stephen Pierce performed well on the mound for Newnan. Turner gave up four hits, while striking out five batters, while Pierce gave up two hits and struck out three Powder Springs players. If you have scores to call in from any of the league play going on, call 770-719-1880 ext. 209, or email to the address at the top of the article. |
