Anniversary with $90,000 in Awards The CDR. William S. Stuhr Scholarship Fund for Military Sons and Daughters held its year 2000 Annual Scholarship AwardsÌ Luncheon on June 20th, at a gala affair at The Union League Club in New York City. Scholarships, totaling $90,000 over the four years in college, were awarded to five gifted sons and daughters of the Armed Services each year. The AwardsÌ Luncheon had as its Guest of Honor and Speaker the Honorable Alphonso Maldon Jr., Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Management Policy. Mr. Maldon is originally from New York City. The Scholarship was founded in January 1965 by Commander Stuhr. It benefited from the active support of scores of America's best known public and private companies, such as Citibank, Best Foods, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods, U.S. Steel, and Caterpillar. In 1993, the Fund received its first foundation grant from the Hugoton Foundation. During the past few years the Scholarship Fund was privileged to have new trustees from VA, TX and MO join the Board. This year MG Richard E. Beale, USA (Ret.), until recently Director of DeCA, also became a Trustee. Since its founding the Fund has awarded scholarships totaling over $500,000 to graduating high school seniors of military homes of enlisted personal and commissioned officers, both active and retired. Among the twenty winners studying during the 1999-2000 scholastic year, seventeen achieved academic distinction: Presidents List, Deans List, or enrollment in Honors Programs. The Fund currently has scholarship winners studying in 20 universities and colleges in 13 states including prestigious institutions such as Princeton, Duke, Dartmouth, and MIT. This year's Air Force Scholarship winner William L. Adams from Fayetteville, GA is the youngest son of TSGT Robert Adams, USAF (Ret.), and Tuyet Adams. He graduated with a GPA of 4.0 and a SAT score of 1560. He has spent 9 years studying the alto saxophone and has performed as principal saxophonist in district and all-state bands. He will be attending Harvard this fall. This other winners this year are from WI, VA, KS, and CA. The Stuhr Scholarship FundÌs goal is to create an endowment of $1,000,000 in the next few years in order to have the scholarship program become self-sustaining from investment income in perpetuity while permitting an increase in the awards to better help meet todays college costs, the Funds tribute to the Armed Services, and its legacy to the future education of the country's youth.
