GYB
offers free performance Friday BY MICHAEL
BOYLAN The theater scene is very active in Fayette County this summer, but so is the ballet scene. Friday, June 30, the Georgia Youth Ballet will present the second performance in its Summer at Sams series. The GYB, under the direction of Magdalena Maury, will be joined by international guest artists and the American Ballet Theatre. Elie Lazar and Jessica Mylene, two internationally known ballet dancers and choreographers, will perform Esmerelda Pas De Deux and Suite Fragments, which is an original ballet premiered by Elie Lazar in Japan. The American Ballet Theatre will perform the Garden Scene From Le Corsaire. Italian Symphony and two works for younger students, The Slumber Party and Western, also will be performed by the GYB. The performance is the culmination of a four-week intensive workshop given by the GYB at their headquarters, The Studio. Guest faculty taught classes and rehearsals to dancers from Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Georgia and Mississippi. This year in addition to Elie Lazar and Jessica Mylene were Magda Aunon and Thom Clower from Yuma Ballet. The free show will begin at 7:30 p.m. The GYB also spent some time at the Southeast Regional Ballet Festival recently. The young dancers took classes from teachers all over the world and presented two ballets at the SERBA performances. Young choreographer Jamie Rosser was one of the youngest dancers whose work was chosen. Directors, dancers and choreographers were impressed with the sophistication of her work and selected her to attend the Craft of Choreographers Conference in Texas this summer. The GYB also had two students receive scholarships from SERBA. Katie Whitlock and David Gant, two graduating seniors, received coveted scholarships out of an audition class of 123 students. Gant will sign with either the Louisville Ballet or the Greenville Ballet. Randi Loudermilk will dance with the Alabama Ballet. The GYB had students receive more than 20 dance scholarships this year to such places as the Joffrey Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Walnut Hill. Auditions for the Georgia Youth Ballet will be Aug. 19. For information on the company, the performance or auditions, phone 770-716-9858.
