Movies

Opening Friday

Chicken Run — The creators of Wallace and Gromitt bring their whimsical vision of chickens flying the coop to the screen. Mel Gibson stars as an American rooster that helps the chickens avoid being made into pie. This looks amazing. Rated G.

Me, Myself and Irene — This movie is hysterically funny. The audience laughed like little girls. And though Jim Carrey is the star, and he is terrific, this is not, repeat, NOT, for children. Rated R.

Now Playing

Big Momma's House — Martin Lawrence looks to solidify his box office power with this comedy about a policeman who goes underocover to protect a damsel in distress. Rated PG-13.

Boys and Girls — Jason Biggs (American Pie) and Freddie Prinze Jr. star in this romantic comedy about ...boys and girls. If someone spent more than two weeks on the script, it might be worth a viewing, but there is an awful lot of good stuff out there. Rated PG-13.

Dinosaur — This is Disney's summer movie and it looks like a monster. Using a mixture of CGI and live action footage, Dinosaur tells the story of a lost dinosaur and his new friends. Rated PG.

Fantasia 2000 — Only the Sorcerer's Apprentice returns in this new animated/orchestral extravaganza from Disney. The kids might be bored, but leave them at home. Rated G.

Gladiator — Russell Crowe (The Insider) stars as Maximus, asoldier who is enslaved and must fight for honor and survival. The bad guy is named Commodus, get it ? Rated R.

Gone in 60 Seconds — Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie star in this film about heisting 50 cars in one night to save a man's little brother. Who knew Grand Theft Auto would be so exciting. Rated PG-13.

Mission Impossible 2 — Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, the best secret agent since Sean Connery was James Bond. This time Cruise is directed by genius John Woo, who gave us Face Off and a ton of great Hong Kong action-thrillers. It was a lot of fun with amazing action and fight sequences. Rated PG-13.

Road Trip — Road Trip ruled ! The pace was excellent, the jokes were hysterical and the grossout humor is at a minimum. Plus, see the UGA campus pose as the University of Ithaca.Rated R.

Shaft — Samuel L. Jackson is Shaft (the original Shaft's nephew). Expect lots of action, and trash talk as Shaft brings down a cold-blooded killer. Plus, he has luck with all the ladies. Rated R.

Shangai Noon — Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson star in what looks like Rush Hour in the wild west (and that is not a bad thing). Chan's American made movies are infinitely better than his Hong Kong action flicks and Wilson is very funny. Man, I am glad summer movie season is here. Rated PG-13.

Titan A.E. — Matt Damon gets animated in this sci-fi action flick that looks like it can kick Battlefield Earth's butt. Rated PG.

U-571 — An American submarine crew in WWII finds a German submarine and must battle to stay alive. Matthew McConaughey and Harvey Keitel star. Rated PG-13.

Also Playing

Erin Brockovich — Julia Roberts stars in this film about a woman who brings down a big corporation. I hear she wears revealing clothing. Rated R.

Mission to Mars — Brian Depalma directs this fim about a rescue mission to Mars. Tim Robbins and Gary Sinise star. Rated PG.

My Dog Skip — Frankie Muniz (Malcom in the Middle) stars as a boy who gets a dog.Hailed by critics as a truly great family film, check out My Dog Skip for a buck. Rated PG.

Reindeer Games — Ben Affleck stars in this film about a man who must participate in a robbery to save his girlfriend and himself. Rated R.

Return To Me — David Duchovny and Minnie Driver star in this film about two people who are looking for love. There's more to the plot, but really it is just a nice date film. Rated PG-13.

Romeo Must Die — Jet Li fights for love in this fast-paced, urban thriller. I heard this was very good. Rated R.

Skulls — If you join a secret society in college, ask yourself, where does it end ? Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek) didn't and he almost found out the hard way. Rated PG-13.

Snow Day — When it gets too hot, check out this movie about kids hanging on to a snow day. This is a Nickelodeon film, but without the heart of a Good Burger. Rated PG.

The Road to El Dorado — Not very well-received in its initial run, this animated film from Dreamworks would have been crushed in the summer film season. Rated PG.

The Tigger Movie — Tigger and all of his friends from the Hundred Acre Forest are back in this tale about friendship and family. Rated G.

Where The Heart Is — Natalie Portman's character has a baby in a Wal-Mart and the town either loves her or hates her. Ashley Judd also stars. rated PG-13.
