Dr. Robert Welborn, Clayton College & State University professor of history and an experienced tour conductor, will conduct an exploration of three rich cultural and historical sites in Georgia this summer for the university's Office of Continuing Education.

The first tour will explore Georgia's Indian Heritage. The university van will depart from the CCSU Harry S. Downs Center for Continuing Education at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 8. The first stop will be in Cartersville to visit the famous Etowah Indian Mounds State Historic Site and explore the remains of one of the most important Mississippian culture sites in the Southeast.

From there the tour will drive north to study the Cherokee and visit the site of the capital of the Cherokee Nation, New Echota State Historic Site. Finally, the tour will visit the Vann House near Dalton, Ga. to see how the Cherokee upper class lived before their removal by the U.S. Army in the late 1830s. Arrival back at CCSU will be around 7 p.m. The cost of this tour is $59.

The next tour will explore the Heritage of middle Georgia, including a tour of the Macon/Ocmulgee Area. The van will depart from the Downs Center at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 22. The first stop will be the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds National Historic Site, touring the earliest urban center in Middle Georgia. Then it's on to the city of Macon and guided tours of the historic Hay House, the largest private antebellum residence in Georgia, and the Sidney Lanier Cottage, home of Georgia's beloved poet Laureate.

The tour will conclude by visiting one of the most noted Victorian cemeteries in the Southeast, the historic Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrival back at CCSU will be around 6 p.m. The cost of this tour is $59.

The third tour will focus on the Civil War in Georgia, visiting Pickett's Mill and Kennesaw Mountain.

The college van will depart from the Downs Center at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5. The first stop is Pickett's Mill State Historic Site for a guided tour of one of the best preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. Then the tour will travel to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park for a visit of the acclaimed museum, a viewing of the award winning video, and a tour of the battlefield, including a trip to the top of Kennesaw Mountain. Arrival back at CCSU should be about 6 p.m. The cost of this tour is $49.
