Campers
present 'The Legend of Pocahontas' this weekend BY MICHAEL
BOYLAN Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is this: You and your fellow campers will put on a play in two weeks. You will audition for roles, learn your lines and rehearse, design the sets and costumes, learn the choreography and put on the production. Sound like a daunting task? It is. Especially when the cast and crew is made up of children 4-14. The campers are enrolled in Drama Production Camp, put on by A Company of Friends theatrical group and the Fayette County Community Schools. The camp began June 12 and the production of the play, The Legend of Pocahontas, will be presented this Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25. Though the story of Pocahontas is well-known, the campers put their own spin on the tale. Many Native American legends are included in the production, making this performance of Pocahontas different than any other. The Legend of Pocahontas is the story of an Indian girl who falls in love with English explorer John Smith. The tale has been told many times, most recently in an animated Disney musical. The camp's production features four beautiful songs, colorful costumes and Indian lore. The play is suitable for all ages and runs approximately 40 minutes. The Legend of Pocahontas will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 at Sams Auditorium in Fayetteville. The doors will open at 2 p.m. Phone 770-251-7611. Princess Pocahontas will be played by Casey McConnell, while Captain John Smith will be played by Matthew Perello. The show was adapted and written by Tammy Barton and Gayann Truelove. The music and lyrics were written by Scott DeTurk.
