Fayette
baseball teams split during tight doubleheaders By
MICHAEL BOYLAN Last week some old rivals met on the baseball diamond. It called back memories of a few months ago hen the squads were competing for their schools. Now, it is just for a summer league, but the competitive drive remains high. Fayette County hosted a double header against Tyrone (Sandy Creek), while McIntosh (known in the summer as the Mavericks) hosted Starr's Mill (the Panthers). All of the teams split their doubleheaders. Fayette County built a 3-0 lead by the end of the second inning, but pitcher Michael Harrell got into a little trouble and gave up two runs. The Tiger defense prevented more runs from scoring that inning by throwing out two runners at the plate. Sandy Creek produced two more runs in the fourth inning to take a lead, but the Tigers came back in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead and secure the 6-4 win. Sandy Creek came back and won the second game of the double header by a score of 7-4. Michale Maney itched a complete game as the Patriots got a homerun by Josh Collins and four key hits from Rusty Bennett and Chris Mathis. Meanwhile, McIntosh High School was the scene of a split between the Mavericks and the Panthers. The Mavericks won game one by a score of 5-2, thanks in large part to pitcher Billy Secor. Secor pitched a complete game and also hit a homerun. Stephen hall hit a two run homerun in the victory. The second game was all Starr's Mill, as they cruised to a 16-2 victory. Everybody in the Panther lineup had a hit in the win and jake Jones had several key hits that helped put the Panthers on top. Brandon Rogers earned the win on the mound for Starr's Mill. All four teams participated in the Parkview Shootout over the weekend. The tournament featured over 100 other teams, showcasing some of the top baseball talent in the state. |
