Peachtree City's Reed Sorenson is 14 years old and is quickly moving up the ranks of auto racing. Sorenson, also known by the nickname, “Reed Racer”, has recently been featured in Sports Illustrated for Kids as well as Winston Cup Scene and Racing For Kids Magazine. He has his own website, reedracer.com, and a growing fan base.

Last Thursday, Sorenson raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the pro division of the Thursday Thunder Series. Sorenson took first place against many older and more experienced drivers and now leads the points standings.

“That was a little bit heavier competition than the other divisions, so that win really means a lot,” Sorenson said. “I had confidence that i could win, but it was stil a great feeling to actually do it.”

Sorenson races Legends cars, which look like old fashioned hot rods and are powered by motorcycle engines. Sorenson can get the speed up to over 100 miles per hour on a straightaway and can compete against 26 other racers for 25 laps.

He started his racing career at the age of six, racing quarter midgets and winning nine Southeastern Championships and 15 track records over the next six years. he then joined the Legends series and soon became the youngest feature winer in legends history at th age of 12. During that first season, Sorenson won 8 of 10 races in the Young Lions division championship.

Last year, Sorenson moved up to Semi-Pro and won 7 of 10 races. He also captured the Atlanta Motor Speedway and Georgia State divisdion championship last year. He finished last year ranked third nationally.

There is definitely more excitement to come in Sorenson's career. Sorenson hopes to move up to NASCAR when he is older. His favorite racer is Jeff Gordon. “I admire him because he started young, like me.”
