Vacations are good for the soul

By CHUCK GRIFFITH

The late columnist Arthur Brisbane declined to accept William Randolph Hearst's offer of a six months paid vacation in appreciation for his good work.

“There are two reasons why I will not accept your generous offer, Mr. Hearst,” said Brisbane. “The first is that if I quit writing my column for half a year, it might affect the circulation of your newspapers. The second reason is that it might not!”

This Summer I am filling in for Dr. John Hatcher as he takes a short rest from writing this column. His weekly wisdom and insights will be missed for the next several weeks but I trust the absence of his thoughts will not keep you from reading this column.

All of us need a vacation from time to time. Even the Bible tells us that Jesus encouraged His disciples to take a break.

“The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to Him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, He said to them, `Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 6:30-31

If you take a vacation this Summer remember a few important points that are often overlooked:

1) Make sure you get refreshed spiritually as well as physically. Jesus told the disciples to get away with Him to get some rest. Another place Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

2) Your vacation might cause you to miss your church a Sunday or two but remember the needs of your church continue even when you are gone. Make sure you send your financial support and have the areas where you volunteer covered before you leave town.

3) Be faithful to attend services at your church before and after your vacation. Others will be gone and your presence in service will be needed.

If you will follow these simple guidelines you can enjoy a guilt free vacation.

Have a great summer.
