I'm writing to commend you (Amy Riley, June 7) for publicly taking a stand for our constitutionally protected right to own and bear arms.

You really hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that the root problem is a nation without soul or conscience. The cliches about “guns don't kill people - people kill people” and “when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns” are dead right.

I'm sure you know about the situation in Australia. Crime has skyrocketed there because the criminals know they have a defenseless population.

I won't belabor the issue, but thanks again for telling it like it is in your May 17 column. This is one of our most fundamental and precious freedoms. We simply cannot allow the government to take it from us. God bless!
