Xtras! perform "Inherit the Wind"

The question of evolution being taught over creationism in schools has been in the news a lot lately.

Audiences will get to revisit the case that launched the entire debate when Newnan Community Theatre Company's teen troupe Xtras! presents Lawrence and Lee's taut retelling of the story of the infamous Scopes “Monkey” trial. Two high-profile lawyers come to a small Tennessee town to use the case of a teacher accused of teaching evolution to spotlight their own causes.

Xtras! meets every Tuesday night 7-9 at the theater. Director Laurel Alford leads the group in a variety of theater exercises from week to week. Anyone in grades 6-12 is welcome to join — there is no cost to join or participate.

Later this season, the Xtras! will stage a production of “Romeo and Juliet.” Xtras! performances are part of NCTC's Second Season productions, offering audiences entertainment and putting NCTC's new facility to good use between Mainstage shows.

This Xtras! production is directed by Laurel Alford and features some of the teen group's best and brightest performers. As the two titans who square off over the teaching of evolution, Mike Funt and Stan Gentry will play Drummond and Brady, respectively. Blake Doughty plays the caustic national reporter Hornbeck, and Heidi Kline plays Mrs. Brady. Danny Draper plays the Reverend Brown, and Katie Dawson plays his daughter Rachel, who is in love, as it would happen, with the center of this whole circus, the hapless teacher Cates, played by Michael Humphrey.

Others in the cast include Collin Parker as Howard, Jonathan Yoder as Meeker, Joshua Doyal as the Judge, Adam Yoder as Davenport, Caroline Krigline and Erika Black as assorted townswomen, and TJ Riley as Siller.

The show will be performed June 8 -10 at 8 p.m. The cost is $8 for adults and $6 for students. Call 770-683-NCTC for directions to the theater, or for information about this show or other NCTC activities. Also, visit the NCTC web site at www.newnantheatre.com.

The Newnan Community Theatre is at 24 First Ave., three blocks southwest of the Courthouse Square in Newnan, in the old Johnson Hardware building.
