There is a new theater group in this area, serving the entertainment and creative needs of both Fayette and Coweta counties.

The new Fayette-Coweta Civic Theatre will offer family-oriented productions, drama camps, acting lessons, and workshops throughout the year. The new theater group is formed by Tammy Barton, the former artistic director for Fayette Community Theatre.

Barton promises to maintain the high standard of family style entertainment that she has become known for in her 11 years with FCT. Barton is joined by Gayann Truelove, who will serve as associate director, and Alwyn Mindoro, who will lead casts as the musical director.

Fayette-Coweta Civic Theatre will function as a nonprofit community based organization, which will maintain a small compensated professional staff. The theater group is in association with the Fayette County Community Schools and will give 15 percent of profits to arts education. The group's productions will be staged at Sams Auditorium in the LaFayette Educational Center (the Old Fayette County High School) in Fayetteville.

The inaugural 2000-2001 season will feature several quality family productions, beginning with the musical “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Other productions this year will include “A Winnie the Pooh Christmas Tail,” “The Reluctant Dragon,” “The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland” and “The Secret Garden.” Auditions will be announced in the local newspapers, through the theater's mailing list and at both the Peachtree City and Fayetteville libraries.

The group also will offer a fun and educational Drama Production Camp this summer. The camp is designed to let campers experience all the aspects of a theatrical production through a hands-on approach. The campers will work toward the full musical production of “Pocahontas,” which will be presented June 24 and 25 at Sams Auditorium.

Campers will design and create sets, learn character makeup, create costumes, act, take part in an informal audition, experience singing and dancing performance, and learn proper stage presence. The camp lasts for two weeks; June 12-16 and June 19-23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The fee is $200 and includes a camp t-shirt. The camp is limited to 30 campers and is filling up fast.

Phone the Fayette Community School office at 770-460-3990, ext. 470, ext. 2, to register.

Fayette-Coweta Civic Theatre also will offer private acting lesson for actors 7 to adult. The classes will be presented in four 45-minute lessons, tailored to the specific needs, goals and experience levels of the actor. The two sessions available to sign up for now are: Session I — June 26 and 29 and July 3 and 6; Session II — Oct. 2, 5, 9 and 12. The cost of each session is $95. To register, call 770-599-0051.
