Classics finalize the 2000 season

The Atlanta Classics finalized their 2000 team roster and are excited to start their season off with a bang.

Although the Classics lost their first game to the Jacksonville Jade on Saturday, May 13th, the team came back with a fiery explosion this past Saturday when they defeated the Piedmont Spark 3-1. With the Classics first victory of the season, the team is excited to continue forward and create greater wins through the 2000 season.

With returning players Lynn Nester, Sarah Crawford, Julie and Nancy Augustyniak, Lana McHugh, Kim Brickner, Kim Szurovy, Jenny Crawford, Jennifer Rawlings, Allison McCurry, Stephanie Yarem and Kerry Gragg, the Classics are sure to push to higher levels and beat their 1999 season record, winning the 1999 Southern Conference Final.

Last year, the Classics scored the second highest number of goals (52) during the 1999 W-League season (14 games), and plan on surpassing that number this season. The Classics concluded their regular season last year with a 10-4 record. With strong and talented returning players such as Kerry Gragg, leading goal-scorer in 1999 with 18 goals, 8 assists, 44 points, and Jenny Crawford, second leading goal-scorer in 1999 with 16 goals, 9 assists, 41 points, the Classics envision an even better 2000 season.

Recently signed players who were not members of the Atlanta Classics last year include Juliana Filipe, previously playing for the Guarani Soccer Club, Heather Roddenberry, previously playing for Georgia State University, Deliah Arrington, Lea Shreve, Tricia Williams and Tatum Clowney, all four previously playing for Clemson University, Ali Parker, previously playing for the University of Evansville, Janet Davis, previously playing for Soccer Alley and Audrey Fonnegra, previously playing for Saturn Futbal of Georgia.

With a long list of talented, dedicated players combined with the coaching direction of Michael Sabatelle, the Classics are viable candidates for a Championship victory this season. Come to the Classics next home game this Saturday as they take on the Charlotte Lady Eagles at 7:30pm at Parkview high school. Support women's soccer and cheer on your favorite local W-League soccer team this Saturday.
