Gym
South full of activities By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Gym South has had a lot of its students find success recently, from national level male gymnasts to all-star cheer-leading squads. Joshua Blackman and Mitch Griffin both qualified for the Junior Olympic National Competition, which involved the top 150 high school gymnasts in the country. They qualified for the national meet, which was in Austin, Texas recently. Both made the finals, which comprised the top 54 all-around gymnasts in the country. Blackman placed 41st, while Griffin placed 47th. Griffin, a senior this year, received a gymnastic scholarship from the University of Minnesota. The Gym South boys gymnastic team swept the state competitions, winning two first place and one second place team awards at various levels. The Gym South girls teams also fared well. They took first place at a number of meets during the season and had many individual champions. In March, Gym South also started a Special Olympics program to physically challenge children with special needs. They will participate in this year's Special Olympics program over Memorial Day weekend. Special Olympics builds self-confidence and joy in all of the participants and Gym South is a newcomer in this arena. Cheer-leading also has become a huge attraction at Gym South, since tumbling is now an essential part of the sport. With new cheer floors and tumbling trampolines, Gym South just held tryouts for All Stars, which is a competition squad that can go all the way to the nationals. Since school squads must stop at state levels of competition, All Stars offers opportunities for athletes to take their sport to scholarship levels. For information phone Gym South at 770-461-5528.
