Clayton State offers camps for the kids

The Clayton College & State University Athletic Department has released the dates of its 2000 summer athletic camps.

The camps are open to the public and will be begin in June and run through mid-August.

All summer camps will be on the Clayton State campus, and will have staff members present from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for early drop-off and late pick-up. Participants should bring their own lunches.

Head men's coach Jim Hebron and head women's coach A.C. McCullers will offer basketball camps for boys and girls this summer. Both camps are open to youths 6-13. The girls camp dates are June 5-9 and June 26-30, while the boys camps will be June 12-16 and June 19-23. The camps will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $125 per person, and each participant will receive a t-shirt and basketball.

Cross country and track coach Mike Mead will offer two half-day camps and two week-long camps focusing on speed development. This camp is designed for athletes of all abilities who need to improve sport-specific speed. Campers learn drills, skills, games, techniques and exercises that improve leg speed, agility, jumping ability, endurance, strength and flexibility.

The first one-day camp date is June 10, and is open to youths 13-17. The second one-day camp is scheduled for June 17 for youths 6-12. Both camps will run from 9 a.m. to noon. July 10-14 is the first week-long camp, open to children 6 to 9. The second week-long camp is July 17-21 for youths 10-14. Both camps run 8 a.m. to noon. Cost for the day-long camps is $29, while the week-long fee is $69.

John Rootes, the winningest NCAA Division II coach and men's coach at Clayton State, and T.O. Totty, the women's coach, will be offering coed boys and girls soccer camps. Three week-long camps will be offered, with half-day and full-day camps to target different age groups.

The dates for the camps are June 12-16, June 26-30, and Aug. 14-18. The half-day camp will run 9 a.m. to noon and is open to children 4 and 5. The full-day camp will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. and is open to youths 6-16. The fee for the half-day camp is $99, and the cost of the full-day camp is $135.

Clayton State also will offer one week of tennis camp at the CCSU tennis complex July 24-28. There are three different sessions, each targeting a specific age group. The first session will be 8:00 - 10 a.m. for children 5-7. The second is for children 8-10, and will start at 10 a.m. and conclude at noon. The final session of the day is for ages 11-14 and will be 2 - 5 p.m.
