Don't
give up home rule to ARC 'squeeze' On my return from an out-of-town trip, I read with great interest [about] the Atlanta Regional Commission squeeze on the county's density guidelines. Nearly 40 years ago, I served on the Westchester County (New York) Board of Supervisors, the county's legislative body. MRC (Metro Regional Council) sought our participation. After serious consideration, it was rejected. It was to include New York City, Long Island, some of Connecticut, etc. MRC was to create a secretariat with power to make [tax] assessments. Our founding fathers believed, the government closest to the people is the best government. Our citizens must not relinquish control and must remain alert. Cooperation with neighboring communities is one thing, but giving up home rule is something else. Daniel F. McMahon
