Offshoot offers drama camp this summer

Fayette County-based Offshoot Productions has announced three different week-long summer theater camps for children offered through the Community School at LaFayette Educational Center in Fayetteville.

The camps are part of Offshoot's “Festival of Theater for Children,” with activities spread throughout June and July.

The first summer camp, which runs June 19 - 23, is creative dramatics, geared for children 6 - 8. According to artistic director Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D., who has been teaching acting for 30 years, “Children enjoy games and are naturally imaginative, so it makes sense that the theater games they'll play in the camp provide an excellent way of introducing them to the stage and instilling confidence.”

The camp meets Monday through Friday, 10 - 11:30 a.m., and costs $42. A daily snack is provided for the youngsters.

The second camp, designed for children 9 to 12, is “curtains up!” This camp meets Monday through Friday, June 26 - 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Work will focus on creating an ensemble and on character development. During the week, the participants will work on a short performance using “story theater” techniques. An invited audience will view the result Friday afternoon at 1. Cost for the workshop is $65.

The final camp is for adolescents 13 - 17, and meets July 10 - 14. In scenes for teens, the participants will work on scripted material written for their age range. Scenes will be presented Friday at 1 p.m. Fee is $65.

Several instructors, including Steadman, will teach the camps, so that the young actors will have input from various sources. All camps will stress the process of creating theater and the ways in which actors work together.

To register, phone the Community School at 770-460-3990, ext. 1135. For information, phone Offshoot at 770-631-2362 or e-mail to offshootpr@aol.com.

Other aspects of the “Festival of Theater for Children” include a workshop in stagecraft, single session acting workshops at the Peachtree City Library, and the presentation of two participatory children's musicals: “The Further Adventures of Maide Marian” and “The Tale of the Frog Prince” at the LaFayette Educational Center between July 20 and July 30.
