Special activities highlight Tyrone First Christian's 100th anniversary

Friends, former members, and neighbors of First Christian Church of Tyrone are invited to participate in a special day of activities this Sunday. The church is celebrating its 100th anniversary and members are attempting to re-create the atmosphere and worship experiences of those founders of a century ago.

The church was founded in 1900 near what is now the College Park Marta Station. Early founders met under a brush arbor until their first building could be constructed. Those attending this Sunday are asked to dress in old-fashioned attire and to bring a picnic lunch for “dinner on the grounds.” Hymns for the service will be some of those possibly sung by the early church families as they gathered for worship on that first Sunday. Every effort is being made to re-create the sort of service charter members would have experienced. Worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. outdoors under a brush arbor.

The picnic will follow the worship service and the day will conclude with a 6 p.m. musical presentation, “Father Knows Best,” performed by the children's choirs in the church auditorium.

“This program promises to be a great reminder of one of the reasons First Christian Church has continued its ministry over the 100 years of the 20th century, “ a spokesperson said.

First Christian is on Jenkins Rd. in Tyrone, adjacent to the Burch Elementary School. For more information, call 770-969-7346.
