Wings
Over Dixie this weekend Canadian aerobatic team expected to dazzle huge crowd BY
MONROE ROARK More than 30,000 spectators are expeceted to flock to Falcon Field in Peachtree City this Saturday and Sunday to get a glimpse of some of the top aviators in the world at the AirTran Airways Wings Over Dixie 2000 Air Show & Festival. The 1999 show last September raised $244,000 from some 20,000 visitors, and much of that money ended up in the coffers of Fayette County charities, such as the Fayette Youth Protection Home. The Peachtree City Kiwanis alone made a reported $18,000 from last year's show for its various community projects. The featured attraction at Wings Over Dixie this year will be the Canadian Armed Forces Snowbirds, a Canadian team that many say is the best military air show team anywhere. Their availability helped determine the dates for this year's show. The Snowbirds, who fly the only nine-ship formation in North America, are equal in stature to the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds of the U.S. Air Force, according to Wings Over Dixie officials, who describe their performance as a ballet in the sky. We believe Atlanta will see its best air show in years, said chairman Jim Friday. It's great when a community can come together for such a wonderful event. But knowing that it's all being done to support worthy charities makes it even more remarkable. The gates will open at 9 a.m. both days, and the aerobatic portion of the air show begins at 1 p.m. Tickets at the gate are $12 for adults, $9 for children ages 6 to 12, and children five and under are admitted free. Discounted tickets are available at all Kroger stores in the metro Atlanta area. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at the following locations: Sandy Creek High School, on Jenkins Road near Ga. Highway 74 in Tyrone; McIntosh High School, on Walt Banks Road near Ga. Highway 54 in Peachtree City; Starr's Mill High School, south of Peachtree City at the intersection of Hwy. 74 and Redwine Road; and The new Kiwanis Fairgrounds, south of Fayetteville on Goza Road near Ga. Highway 85. Complete directions and a detailed parking map are available online at www.wingsoverdixie.org. Handicapped parking and golf cart parking will be available at Falcon Field.
