FCHS puts six athletes in state track meet

Having competed and placed either first or second in their events at the region track meet earlier this month, six Fayette County High School athletes qualified for the state meet.

The girls participated in the state meet in Jefferson County on May 5 and 6. Megan Byrd qualified in the high jump and the triple jump. Margaret Sams was scheduled to run in the 800 meter run, while Jessica Tyre qualified for the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs.

For the boys, Trey Alverson and Jon Riley qualified in the 1,600 meter run, while Trevor Bowman competes in the 200 meter and 400 meter run. Riley will also run in the 3,200 meter run. The boys will be in Jefferson on May 12 and 13.

During the Region Competition, FCHS girls placed third overall, while the boys finished in fourth place. Their finishes were the highest that either team has placed since 1988. Other team members who represented FCHS in the region finals, but did not qualify for the state meet are: Justin lane in the Pole Vault, the 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Bowman, Zach Baker, Max Loth and Justin McAbee, Rachel Swafford in the 800 meter run, and Tara Hartog and Ashley Mutter in the 100 meter hurdles.

Coach John Strickland commented "We are proud of the whole track team this year and especially the six athletes who have qualified for the state. They all practiced and competed this year with one goal in mind - "to make it to the state." These athletes are competitive in their respective events and we are hoping for some great finishes."
