Area
full of regional champions By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The regional soccer playoffs wrapped up last week and the county is once again surrounded by region and area champs. The Starr's Mill boys soccer team hosted the Henry County Warhawks on Thursday night for the 4-AAA area championship. The Lady Panthers had wrapped their area championship the night before. The Panthers dominated the Warhawks the entire way, but couldn't capitalize on their many scoring attempts. Their fate changed in the last 10 minutes of the game though, when Jordan Davis put the ball in the back of the net. The goal reenergized the Panthers who put a number of shots on the Henry County net. It appeared they had scored an insurance gal with two minutes remaining but it was called back due to offsides. The win gave the Panthers home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They hosted Hardaway last night at 6:30 p.m., while the Lady panthers will host Shaw tonight. McIntosh High School was the scene of a doubleheader of regional finals on Friday night. The Lady Chiefs faced their rivals the Fayette County Lady Tigers, while the boys faced the Griffin Bears. The Lady Chiefs dominated the game from the opening kick, putting tons of pressure on the Tiger defense and goalkeeper Cassie Coggins. The score didn't reflect the tone of the game though as it was 0-0 at the half. McIntosh scored eight minutes into the second half when Julie Herdic scored off of a corner kick by Elizabeth Gardner. It was 18 minutes before the Lady Chiefs scored again, but then the floodgates opened, leading to a 4-0 victory and a regional championship. The boys faced the Griffin Bears and won by the same score of 4-0. The offense was too much for the Bears to handle, as the Chiefs got good performances from the whole team, including Beau Balesky, Matt Clements and Charlie Gonzalez. The boys hosted Warner Robins last night after the girls faced Lakesdide-Evans. The Fayette County girls are scheduled to meet Houston County in Houston County tonight at 6 p.m. |
