Many serious illnesses are entirely preventable when warning signs are recognized in time.

As a service to both congregation and community, the Health Cabinet of Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City will host a Mini-Health Fair at the church on Sunday, May 7, from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., followed by Life Line Screening on May 16.

Coordinated by health care professionals and congregation members Ashley Helvig, Melissa Stephens, Judy Moore and Connie Klopfenstein, this will be the church's third such event. Free screening for diabetes and high blood pressure will be offered, as well as information on a wide range of medical concerns, with professionals on hand to answer questions.

Mobile mammography will also be available, but coordinators emphasized that appointments must be prescheduled. Women desiring a mammogram should call 770-541-1111 and request “screening schedules” by May 3. There will be a charge for the mammogram and professional analysis.

Life Line Screening, offering complete vascular and osteoporosis screening, will be at the church Tuesday, May 16. Ultrasound testing can identify carotid artery blockage, linked to 75 percent of strokes.

Peripheral arterial disease can also be detected, and may be indicative of heart disease.

A third screening will be available to detect aortic aneurysms, and another to measure bone mass density, an important indicator of osteoporosis. These tests are painless and non-invasive, and require five to 10 minutes each.

A representative of Life Line Screening will be at the May 7 Health Fair with information and to schedule appointments. Pre-registration is a must. Each test— which could cost several hundred dollars in a hospital setting—costs $35 (all three vascular tests for $95) through Life Line Screening. Results will be sent to participants, and those requiring follow-up will be referred to their own physicians.

Persons who cannot attend the Health Fair may call Life Line Screening at 800-407-4557 for more information or to make an appointment.

The church is located on Ga. Highway 54 at Peachtree Parkway. For more information, Helvig's number is 770-632-1418.
