and Patriots prepare for region meet in track By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The region track meets will be early next week and the local high school track teams look ready, having put on good performances all season long. Last week Starr's Mill and Sandy Creek met in a three-way meet with Woodward Academy. Sandy Creek's girls won the meet with 66 points, while Starr's Mill took second place with 50 points and Woodward placed third with 43 points. Sandy Creek had first place finishes in the 100-meter intermediate hurdles, the 300-meter low hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay, the long jump, the shot put and the discus. They also had a number of point scoring finishes in the meet. Starr's Mill had first place finishes in the 800-meter run, the 1,600-meter run, the 3,200-meter run, and the high jump. The region promises to be very interesting, with Sandy Creek performing better in field events and Starr's Mill performing better in the distance events. Starr's Mill's boys won the meet last Wednesday with 62 points. Woodward Academy placed second with 59 points and Sandy Creek finished in third with 49 points. Starr's Mill had a number of first place finishes, but none bigger than the two turned in by Les Page and the other two from Reuben Houston. Page won the 800-meter and the 1,600-meter runs, while Houston won the long jump and the triple jump. Houston is currently ranked third on the national outdoor track and field list. Starr's Mill also had first place finishes in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, the pole vault and the shot put. Sandy Creek had first place finishes in the discus, the high jump, the 4x100-meter relay and the 100-meter dash. The region 4-AAA girls meet will be at Starr's Mill next Monday and Wednesday, while the boys 4-AAA meet at Starr's Mill will be Saturday, April 29 and Monday, May 1. The region 4-AAAA boys meet will be in LaGrange next Tuesday and Wednesday. |
