Teams look for region championships

The drama to make the state playoffs is now over, but there will be at least one more big game for the local soccer teams before they begin.

In 4-AAAA action on Tuesday night, McIntosh's Lady Chiefs, currently ranked number one in the state as well as in two national polls, defeated Newnan, 11-0. The leading scorer in the state, Julie Herdic, scored four goals in the game and now has 137 career goals. The junior was also named to the All-South team. Keri Pendergrass added a hat trick as the Lady Chiefs clinched a spot in the state playoffs.

The Lady Tigers defeated Griffin on Tuesday night by a score of 2-0. Faith Joslin scored the only goal of the first half and Dana Teat scored 15 minutes into the second half. The two teams victories set up a great match between the two rivals on Friday in the region finals. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The McIntosh boys will follow with a game against Griffin. The Chiefs defeated Stockbridge on Tuesday night by a score of 6-0. Charlie Gonzalez, Beau Balesky and Greg Young all scored for McIntosh, as did Matt Clements who had a hat trick.

The defending AAA champion Starr's Mill Lady Panthers won their area championship on Tuesday by defeating Woodward Academy, 5-0. Alice Martin started the scoring for Starr's Mill in the first half. The Lady Panthers will host either Hardaway or Columbus on Wednesday night in the first round of the state playoffs.

The top ranked Starr's Mill boys team won their first regional playoff game by a score of 11-0. Robert Cooper started the scoring for Starr's Milll early in the first half. Chris Shaver led the team with three goals, while Eric Simonsen added two. The Panthers played last night for the region championship and will open up the state playoffs at home next week.
