Want small town look? Stop all this building

This letter is in response to a recent article I read in The Citizen. It was about the city council wanting to restrict the number of American flags a business is allowed to fly.

That is fine and good, but what struck me is a quote from one to the members of the council. He said, “We're adding more and more to the sky glow, and getting further and further away from the small town community that has made Fayetteville an attractive community to move to.”

I had to laugh and get mad at the same time to that statement. Now is a fine time to be worried about the “small town community” thing, don't you think? I mean, you have gone way past the small town pleasure Fayette County used to be 10 or 20 years ago. They have already gotten this town way past the “small town community.”

They have ruined that with the building of the Pavilion and the other groups of stores that have gone up in the past year or two. Now they want to take a 110 acres of land and cram 203 houses, a hotel, offices and parks on it also, saying that this will give an old town look to Fayette.

What is that? When has anyone looked at a picture of old town Fayette and seen 110 acres of land with a bunch of stuff crammed on it? That is not a small town look, I hate to tell them. What a joke.

Fayette is overcrowded as it is. It is time to stop all this building already and time to stop clear-cutting subdivisions. I can remember riding down Ga. Highway 85 and seeing nothing but trees, and it not taking 15 minutes to do so. I am sure that others can remember what old town Fayette really was and what it really used to be. I have only lived here for 15 years or so and I know the changes that have taken place since then.

These people need to address the council and share with them what a “small town community” is really supposed to be, because I don't think they have any idea. Fayette is starting to look a lot like Riverdale and, let me tell you, that is not a pretty sight, nor is it anything close to having a “small town community” feel to it.

I really just wish they would stop this unneeded building already; they are beginning to make this town undesirable. It isn't the signs or what have you; it is all this building that is ruining this town.
