teams make final bid for playoffs By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The local high school baseball teams are wrapping up their regular season this week, jockeying for the best possible seed in the region playoffs, which begin on Monday. Sandy Creek faced Morrow on Monday and won by a score of 9-5. The Patriots got a big offensive boost from catcher Rusty Bennett. Bennett hit two two-run homeruns in the victory and has generated a lot of offense for the Patriots this season. At 6-4 in the region, the Patriots are guaranteed a slot in the region playoffs but will have to wait for Friday results to see if a tiebreaker game is necessary for seeding. Starr's Mill is heading to the region playoffs as well. The Panthers beat the Mt. Zion, Jonesboro Bulldogs, 12-0 on Monday. Pitcher Joe Mahfood pitched all five innings and struck out 8 batters. Allen Beall had a two-run homerun and Curtis Sebastian went 4-4, with one double and two triples. The Panthers record is 7-3 and they are tied for second in the region. McIntosh is tied for second in their region. The Chiefs defeated Lovejoy by a score of 7-5 on Monday. Mike Switzer pitched well for McIntosh, while Jim O'Shea and Jason Kemmerer each produced 2 RBIs. The Chiefs will play at Fayette County tonight at 7 p.m., after a special ceremony honoring Cecil Travis and the late Coach Jimmie Allen. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Fayette County lost to the top ranked team in the region, Stockbridge, which is also one of the top programs in the state on Monday. The Tigers had a 3-0 lead early but lost to Stockbridge by a score of 8-3. It was the seventh loss in a row for the Tigers, who have lost eight of their last nine games. They will obviously be up for their final game of the season against their rivals, the McIntosh Chiefs. |
