Local
family makes gift to Girl Scouts of Pine Valley By MICHAEL
BOYLAN The Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council's annual fundraising dinner, hosted by Dr. Terry L. Maple at the new Ford Pavilion at Zoo Atlanta, was the setting for announcing a significant gift from the Amy Vassey/ Joyce Cohrs family. The $6,000 gift will purchase two-way radios and build three fire rings at camp Pine Valley, the 600-plus acre Girl Scout camp located in Pike County, Ga. Both Joyce Cohrs and her daughter, Amy Vassey, are deeply committed to the camp, and their interest and support played a role in the council's decision to prepare a Master Site Plan to guide future development of the Girl Scout property. Vassey, wife of Peachtree City dentist Robert Vassey, grew up in Girl Scouting. She joined the movement in Cleveland, Ohio, as a Brownie Girl Scout. When the family moved to Clarkston, Ga., She continued her involvement throughout her high school years. She spent summers at Camp Pine Valley, first as a camper and later as a camp counselor. As an adult, Vassey is still very involved. She has been a Brownie Troop leader for her daughter, Elizabeth, and continues with her troop as they have now progresses on to become Junior Girl Scouts. She has also played a leadership role in local fund development efforts. Joyce Cohrs, Amy's mother, has been a financial supporter of the Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council for many years. However, her philanthropic generosity extends to other areas within her own Decatur, Ga. community as well. She recently made a large gift to the DeKalb Historical Society, which enabled them to install a computer network to facilitate their work. Cohrs is generous with her time as well as her money. She has been actively involved with Goodwill Industries, particularly with their annual book sale. She volunteers with Fernbank Museum of Natural History where she works with the museum's computer system, and she helped convert the Woodward Academy library database onto computers. Vassey and Cohrs come from a family with a strong tradition of volunteerism. Cohr's mother, Elizabeth Stauthammer, who is in her 80's, is an active Pink Lady in her Ohio community. Both Vassey and Cohrs state that their financial support of Camp Pine Valley, owned by Girl Scouts of Pine Valley Council, will continue as the Council moves forward in the new master site plan for development of this beautiful property.
