Starr's Mill students go 'Crazy for You'

Do you remember the songs “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” and “They Can't Take That Away From Me”?

If you're like a lot of people, you have heard those songs millions of times but couldn't place the musical that they come from. The songs are just some of the hits from George Gershwin's popular musical “Crazy For You,” which will be performed this weekend at Starr's Mill High School.

The musical is set in the town of Deadrock, Nev., where the Gaity Theater is about to close down. The foreclosure brings New York financial executive Bobby Childs (Danny Herres) to town to complete the paperwork for the bank repossession. Childs has a great love for musical theater and immediately falls in love with the quaint town and its mail girl, Polly (LeAnn Gruschow).

The young couple decide to put on a musical to save the theater. Childs poses as Bela Zangler, a Broadway producer, and produces a grand show complete with dancing cowboys and Follies girls.

Everything goes alright until the real Zengler (Aron Hall) shows up.

The comedy is provided by a cast of more than 60 students. Ryan McConnell plays the rough hotel owner, Lank, Melissa Moore plays Bobby's fiancee, Irene, and Anthony Bridges and Jennifer Barclay play the Fodors of the Fodor travel books. The show features grand production numbers, complete with tap dancing and chorus lines.

Starr's Mill's spring musical is a major project of the Fine Arts Department of Starr's Mill High School, and has become a treasured community event, after past acclaimed performances of “Oklahoma” and “Fiddler on the Roof.” SMHS drama director Stuart Fail directs the show while choral directors Dan Lane and Diana Gardner provide musical direction. Art teacher Todd Little assists in set production, while Michelle Fail, Stuart Fail's wife, choreographed the show.

“Crazy For You” will be Thursday and Friday, April 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $5 each, with a special-priced student ticket of $4 available for the Tursday show only, and are available from any cast member or by calling 770-486-2710 ext. 135.

All tickets at the door will be $7.
