Local
soccer teams in frenzied playoff picture By
MICHAEL BOYLAN The local high school soccer teams played a series of games before spring break began. McIntosh's boys hosted several teams in the McIntosh Classic, while the McIntosh girls hosted Greensboro Day School from North Carolina. Starr's Mill hosted Riverwood in their brand new stadium on Thursday, while Fayette County battled for a post-season position in Newnan. The Chiefs, ranked fifth in AAAA, hosted Shaw on Thursday, Tulsa-Union (OK) on Friday and Brentwood on Saturday. The competition was fierce and should keep the Chiefs focused as they try to make a run to the state championships. McIntosh led Shaw 2-1 at the half and exchanged goals with them early in the second half. With about 15 minutes to go the score was tied at 4, but the Chiefs got a big boost from Beau Balesky and Matt Clements, who gave McIntosh a two goal lead and the win. Paul Kelly was also a standout for the Chiefs due to his excellent defensive play. Earlier in the day, the Lady Chiefs defeated Greensboro Day by a score of 5-0. In the other two games over the weekend, McIntosh lost to Tulsa-Union (OK) by a score of 1-0 and then defeated Brentwood (TN) 3-1. The Chiefs have locked up the top playoff seed in the region and will host Stockbridge in a semifinal. Fayette County asured themselves a playoff spot as well by beating Newnan by a score of 2-1. The two teams were tied at zero at the half and had played very evenly. Three minutes into the second half Normer Adams hit Ryan Terry with a beautiful pass and gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Newnan struck back 15 minutes later by scoring off of a penalty kick, but lost after Roseman Deas scored off of an assist from Terry. The win secured a playoff berth for the Tigers who will play Griffin in a semi-final. The Tigers will host if Griffin loses to LaGrange and the Bears will host if they beat or tie the Grangers. Starr's Mill's girls will host a playoff game or two, as they are still the top seed in AAA. The Lady Panthers hosted Riverwood on Thursday night and won easily by a score of 11-0. Starr's Mill took 51 shots on goal and had three players with multiple goals. Alice Martin scored three goals in a row and Marcy Hubbard and Janet Burke each had two goals. Starr's Mill will host Heritage High School on April 11 at 6 p.m. The Starr's Mill boys played against Lovejoy on Friday and lost by a score of 3-0. The Panthers are bound for the playoffs though, and playing well. The Sandy Creek boys lost to Woodward last Thursday by a score of 8-0. In 4-AAAA girls soccer, McIntosh is the top seed and will host a semi-final. Fayette County, Griffin and Newnan will all make the playoffs but the seeds won't be determined until the remaining games of the regular season are played. Newnan and Griffin face off on April 11, which will have a huge impact on the seedings. The Lady Chiefs will play in the Wando Field of Champions tournament this weekend . They will play West Springfield, Va. at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and then will play Wando (SC) on Saturday. Fayette County will travel to Brookwood on April 11. |
