Soccer teams play hard before the break

Spring break may begin once school ends Friday, but the minds of the local high school soccer teams were far away from the beach. Many teams scheduled several games this week to keep their teams sharp.

The Sandy Creek boys tied East Coweta's boys Monday night 2-2. The game went into overtime and produced one point for each team. East Coweta then played Morrow Wednesday night and won 4-0. The win was good for the Indians and the Patriots as Morrow is in Sandy Creek's region.

Fayette County's boys played a huge game in Griffin Tuesday night and came away with a 1-0 victory. The win puts the Tigers in a good position to make the playoffs, but they aren't out of the woods yet. Fayette County played another big game with playoff implications at Newnan last night. Both the Tigers and the Cougars are fighting for playoff positions.

McIntosh's boys began the McIntosh Classic Thursday night with a game against Shaw High School. The Chiefs will play Tulsa-Union from Oklahoma at 8 p.m. tonight and will challenge Brentwood High School from Tennessee at 2 p.m. Saturday.

East Coweta's girls had a big game against Upson-Lee Tuesday night and lost 2-1 in overtime. Though the Lady Indians are out of the playoff picture, they are much improved this season and give their opponents tough games.

Fayette County's girls faced the Newnan lady Cougars Tuesday night and won 5-1. The win almost assures the Lady Tigers of the third playoff spot in the region. Fayette County is off until April 11 when they travel to face Brookwood at 7:30 p.m.

Starr's Mill's girls faced Jonesboro Tuesday night and coasted to a 7-0 victory. The Lady Panthers remain at the top of the AAA standings and hosted Riverwood last night.

Most of the soccer teams are scheduled to take a break next week and won't be back in action until the week of April 11. The playoffs arrive soon after that and everybody — players, coaches and fans — will need their energy.
