Fayette Flames make mark in Charleston

Eight members of the Fayette Flames youth track club competed last Saturday in the eighth annual Bell and Schlau Community Youth Track and Field Meet held at Charleston Southern university in Charleston, S.C. The team competed against over 300 participants from teams from Georgia and South Carolina.

In the boys age 8-9 group, David Mathis took first place in the 200 meter dash witha time of 32.85. His older brother, James, took first place in the 100 and 200 mete dash in the age 11-12 age group, running a 14.59 and a 30.79 respectively. Success stayed in the family as their sister, Nicole Mathis, achieved her personal best in the 400 meter. Nicole ran a 1:20 which was four seconds off of her time in last year's District Georgia Parks and Recreation Association meet.

Her teammate, Monique Hawkins, took first in the 400 meter with a time of 1:09. Hawkins also placed first in the 200 meter (29.66) and the 100 meter dash (13.89). Briana Sharp took first place in the girls 9-10 age group for the 100 meter dash with a time of 16.06, while Dashiva Rodgers reached his personal best, 1:25, in the boys 9-10 age group for the 400 meter dash.

While at the meet, the Fayette Flames also participated in a track and field seminar with former U.S. Olympic greats Mel Pender and Charlie Green. Pender and Green were members of the 1968 US Olympic team.

The Bell and Schlau Track and Field meet was organized by Thaddeus J. Bell, a Charleston physician, and Robert Schlau, a Charleston stock broker. both men are world class masters athletes and created the meet to promote physical fitness and good citizenship among youth in the Charleston area.
