'Beanie'
set to bamboozle local audiences By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
As a student, didn't you sometimes wish that someone or something could do your reading for you? In Offshoot Production's new show, Beanie and the Bamboozling Book Machine, a young man creates a machine to read his books for him and that's when problems occur. Beanie, the enterprising young man, puts the books, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Wizard of Oz into his machine. The witches from the three novels escape and it is up to Beanie, Professor Librum and some of the characters from those beloved novels to make everything right again. The show features a cast of 13 actors, ranging in age from 10 to adult, and is directed by Pauline Player. Player moved to the area close to two years ago and brings a lot of theater experience with her. Before moving to Brooks, player worked with the Theatre Guild of Valdosta, where she got work in all aspects of the theater: acting, directing, costuming and stage managing. I chose this play because it is family oriented, fast paced and filled with familiar characters, said Player. The show is aimed at children, but adults should enjoy it, too. The cast and crew are made up of nonprofessionals participating in Offshoot's apprentice program. A. Bryant Betsill Jr. of Fayetteville designed the show, while Offshoot's artistic director Susan Steadman, Ph.D., produced it. The show will be presented in the band room of the LaFayette Educational Center (The Old Fayette County High School) Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. through March 26. Tickets are $5 each. In celebration of Generation Arts Month, the opening night performance features a special ticket deal: one child under 16 is admitted free with each adult ticket purchased. Tickets are available at the Fayette Book Shop in Fayetteville and the Omega Book Center in Peachtree City. For information, phone Offshoot Productions at 770-631-2362.
