The first day of spring is rapidly approaching and the high school soccer season is almost half over. The season has been very exciting so far and the matches seem to only get better.

The Fayette County boys played in perhaps their most heated contest of the year last Friday when they hosted the East Coweta Indians. The Indians struck first and maintained a 1-0 lead until just nine minutes remained. Adam Lester scored off an assist by Normer Adams to tie the game up and send it to overtime, but the referee awarded East Coweta the go-ahead goal a few minutes later, stating that the Fayette County defender did not stop the ball from crossing the goal line.

The Tigers lost 2-1 and are now 5-1-3 overall. Fayette County outshot East Coweta 17-9, but couldn't get the few extra goals that they needed. They hosted Stockbridge last night at 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers (5-4), ranked eighth in AAAA, faced seventh ranked Sprayberry Saturday and lost 2-0. They are in second place in the region and have scored 34 goals but have given up 21. The Lady Tigers played the Lady Bears in Griffin last night at 7:30 p.m.

The seventh ranked McIntosh (7-0) boys soccer team faced Griffin Friday night and won 6-1. Matt Clements scored two goals in the match, while Beau Balesky, Charlie Gonzalez and Rob Nacke each scored a goal a piece. The Chiefs are number one in the region and have scored 44 goals and allowed five. The Chiefs played at Wheeler last night and will face Starr's Mill at home Saturday at 6 p.m.

The second ranked Lady Chiefs (7-0) traveled to Alabama for two games last weekend. Huntsville forfeited the match scheduled for Friday and McIntosh defeated Grissom Saturday 5-0. The Chiefs have scored 58 goals this seaon and have allowed only one. The Lady Chiefs will play at East Coweta at 7:30 tonight, travel to Upson-Lee Friday night at 7:30 and will host Starr's Mill at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Starr's Mill had a productive weekend on the soccer field. The boys team (5-2-2), ranked seventh in AAA, defeated both Riverdale and Marist, while the girls (7-0) also defeated Riverdale. The Panthers faced Riverdale Friday and won 15-0. The score at the half was 7-0 and Riverdale did not get one shot off all game. Mikie Hubbard, Brandon Henry, Tim Murphy and Chris Shaver each had two goals in the win. In their 5-2 win over Marist, Jordan Davis scored the first two goals for Starr's Mill, while Ben Ragan, Josh Vanderbush and Shaver each added one goal.

The Lady Panthers, ranked number one in AAA, also beat Riverdale 15-0. Eleven Starr's Mill players scored in the victory. Jenna McEwan scored three goals, while Marcy Hubbard and Alice Martin each scored two goals. So far this season, the Lady Panthers have outscored their opponents 69-5. They face one of their biggest challenges of the season when they face the McIntosh Lady Chiefs at McIntosh this Saturday night.
