County's
unemployment rate is lowest in region Fayette County's unemployment rate remained the lowest in the metro area, according to January, 2000 figures released by the Department of Labor last week. The rate remained at 1.6 percent, which was matched by Forsyth County. The statistics show that Fayette's labor force was 47,249 with just 734 residents listed as unemployed. Fayette's unchanged rate reflected the rest of the metro Atlanta region. The region's rate remained unchanged at 2.7 percent. We continue to have a very tight labor market in the Atlanta area, said state labor commissioner Michael Thurmond. There are simply not enough skilled workers to meet increasing demand. Even though our labor force has grown, the increase in available workers is not keeping pace with job growth, he added. Other county rates included: Clayton- 3 percent. Henry- 1.9 percent. Rockdale- 2.3 percent. Coweta-4.3 percent. Spading 3.4 percent. |
