Over the course of four days this week, Spivey Hall will be filled with melodious voices and beautiful music, as Grammy winners and world-renowned performers take the stage.

The first show, featuring violinist Axel Strauss, will be Thursday, March 9 at 8:15 p.m. Strauss, 25, began playing violin at the age of 4. He won his first competition at the age of 8 and has recently claimed first prize in the prestigious NaumbUrg Violin Competition. Strauss has appeared as a soloist all over the world and has become a member of the ensemble Philharmonic Violins Berlin. Strauss will perform selections from Mozart, Prokofiev, Schoenberg and Korngold. Tickets for Strauss' performance are $20.

Friday's performer, baritone Thomas Quasthoff, may be small in stature (four feet tall), but he has recently gained national attention, appearing on a segment of “60 Minutes” and winning a Grammy award for Classical Vocal Performance with Annie Sofie Van Otter. Quasthoff began as a Mozart specialist but has expanded his repertoire recently. He will perform selections from Brahms, Liszt, Debussy and Ravel. The show will begin at 3 p.m. Friday, March 10. Tickets for Quasthoff's performance will be $30.

Soprano Arietha Lockhart will be Saturday's performer. Her initial appearance was cancelled due to the January ice storms and is sponsored by Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity's Committee for Professional Advancement.

Lockhart is best known for her work with the Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Robert Shaw. Her program will feature the music of Handel, Mozart, Debussy, Liszt, Delibes and Richard Strauss. The show will begin at 3 p.m Saturday, March 12 and will cost $15.

The weekend will close with the Westminster Choir from Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Conducted by Joseph Flummerfelt, the choir has been chorus-in-residence for the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. The group has released many CD's and will perform the music of Aaron Copland, William Walton, Samuel Barber and Johann Brahms.

The choir recently performed the choral works of Copland as part of the New York Philharmonic's Copland celebration. The show will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 12 and tickets cost $25.

Spivey Hall is on the campus of Clayton College & State University. For ticket information, phone 770-961-3683.
