Why display symbol of repression?

I am sitting here appalled at the ignorance and total lack of open-mindedness displayed by the letter from LeGay Saul. I am a Southerner myself, but am much in favor of changing a flag that offends a sizeable percentage of our population.

Why should we continue to display a monument to a past that caused a great deal of human suffering? We should stop letting a war that was fought almost 140 years ago determine our views and beliefs today. I'm sure the Jewish people who live in Germany today are grateful that flags displaying the swastika are not still flown throughout their country.

I live among many of the so-called carpetbaggers of Peachtree City and feel fortunate to call many of them friends. I firmly believe in our country, which is the United States of America and not the Confederate States of America. I don't view my fellow citizens from the Northeast, Midwest, or West Coast any differently than anyone else. I have been lucky enough to live in and be exposed to the various regions in our country and am happy to report we are all more alike than we are different. All of us are fortunate to be living in a wonderful melting pot that embraces diversity and gives us the freedom of choice.

As for Ms. Saul's many complaints and laments about the United States, I challenge her to find a better place to live. Our country is experiencing one of the greatest economic booms ever as well as a resurgence in volunteerism, community service and involved parenting.

We as Americans are truly blessed. Yes, we have some politicians making mistakes, but show me a country or even a local government that does not. Rather than wasting time immersing ourselves in a past conflict from over a hundred years ago, we should look to the future and strive to give a little something back to our society.
