Every weekend seems to be a big weekend for soccer.

Last weekend, McIntosh's girls team faced Fayette County and beat them 7-1. This weekend Fayette County, both the boys and girls squad, will play in the Newnan Georgia-Alabama Classic. Another big game will be the Starr's Mill girls facing a tough opponent, Parkview, Friday at 8 p.m.

This week, the Lady Chiefs faced LaGrange and won 12-0. The team is currently 5-0, having out-scored their opponents 53-1 this season. The Lady Chiefs' leading goal scorer, Julie Herdic, also is the number one scorer in Region 4-AAAA with 22 goals.

Fayette County rebounded from its game against McIntosh with an 11-0 victory over Lovejoy. Faith Joslin, Cassie Coggins, Mandy Kovach and Rachel Frazier each scored two goals in the win. The Lady Tigers struck early, scoring in the first three minutes. It was 6-0 at the half and Fayette County never looked back.

The Lady Chiefs will play in the tournament in Newnan Friday and Saturday, facing some of the tougher programs from Alabama.

The Newnan Lady Cougars got their second win of the season last week as they handed Marietta a 4-1 loss. Amanda Morton scored the first goal off a beautiful cross from Lanie Scott. Marietta struck right before the half and tied the game. Newnan came out hungry in the second half and got another goal from Morton and a goal from Sister Edge. The final goal of the evening came from Lanie Scott. The Lady Cougars will face Fort Payne, Ala. at 5 p.m. today. They will play Auburn, Ala. at 6 p.m. Saturday.

As a side note, Amanda Morton was selected by TourneySport USA to play in an invitation-only tournament in Hawaii this summer. Currently a member of AFC Lightning, she also is the second leading goal scorer in the history of Newnan High School.

Starr's Mill's Lady Panthers are 4-0 and have defeated Chattahoochee and Brookwood already this season. The testing continues Friday when they host Parkview at the Baseball-Soccer Fields Complex on Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City. Though they have a challenging schedule, the Lady Panthers expect that their stadium will be done before the playoffs begin, giving a very dominating team a home field advantage.

Starr's Mill will face Fayette County Tuesday night at 7.

In other soccer news, the Atlanta Silverbacks have signed Danny Care. Care, from Peachtree City, attended McIntosh High School before playing soccer all four years at Clemson University. He was named to the All-ACC team twice and was captain in his senior year. Since college, Care has played for the Carolina Dynamo, DC United, the Richmond Kickers and the Jacksonville Cyclones.

“It's great to be able to continue my professional soccer career back in my home town,” said Care. “I'm looking forward to beginning the season with the Silverbacks.”

The Silverbacks' home opener is April 15 against the Charleston Battery, but many of the players will be in Fayetteville at The Soccer Centre for a “meet the players” clinic and a challenge match against the Lightning Club All-stars March 11. The clinic will begin at 6:15 p.m. and the game begins at 7:30. Admission is $6 and include an $8 ticket to the home opener.
