Big
perfomances give local teams victories By MICHAEL
BOYLAN
The Sandy Creek baseball team traveled to Peachtree City on Friday night to take on the McIntosh Chiefs and they came out swinging. Catcher Rusty Bennett drove in 2 RBIs at the top of the first, but it would not take long for McIntosh to respond. First baseman Blake Watson hit a 2 run homer at the bottom of the first to give the Chiefs a 3-2 advantage. Watson would hit a homerun in each of his three at-bats on Friday night, ultimately driving in four RBIs. Sandy Creek tied the game in the second inning and took a lead in the top of the third inning, but again Watson hit a homerun to give McIntosh the lead. Both teams drew blanks in the fourth inning and in the bottom of the fifth inning McIntosh began to build a lead. Watson cranked out his final homerun of the game in the fifth and McIntosh's Mike Walliser drove in two more runs in the sixth. Sandy Creek drove in two runs at the top of the seventh, but it was not enough and McIntosh escaped with the win. Fayette County hosted Starr's Mill on Friday night and won, 7-1. Lee Roberson pitched all seven innings for the Tigers, giving up four hits, while striking out eight batters. He was also devastating at the plate, going 3-4, with two homeruns. Roberson is 2-0 this season. Michael Harrell pitched for the Tigers on Saturday as they hammered Westlake 15-0. Fayette County scored 10 runs in the first inning, two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth. They produced 10 hits overall in the win. Harrell pitched three innings, gave up three hits and struck out five batters. He was also named Player of the Year in the 15-16 year old category at the annual Georgia Amateur Baseball Meeting. |
