Atlanta City Church to host Unity Service this Sunday

South Metro churches will come together Sunday, March 5 for the area's first Unity Celebration of the new millennium. Atlanta City Church will serve as host church. The event begins at 6 p.m.

“By far, this will be the largest and most widely represented unity service since such things began four years ago,” said John Hatcher, chairman of the South Metro Ministers Council. “The service will manifest the great diversity in the Christian church while making a statement of the unity we enjoy in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord,” Hatcher added.

Participants will be welcomed by Rev. Rick Snow, pastor of Atlanta City Church, an independent, charismatic fellowship only 20 years in existence. Then, Rev. T.W. Snyder will offer the frist prayer. Rev. Snyder, 90 plus years old, is well known on the south side as a statesman among Southern Baptists.

Interestingly, the main speaker for the evening's unity event will be Rev. Carter Shultz, pastor of Southern Crescent Church of Christ, a denomination known for conducting worship without the use of musical instruments.

Rev. Steve Bingham, pastor of Peachtree City's large First Baptist Church, will lead the way in collecting an offering designated for the National Day of Prayer, another event which brings Christians of different backgrounds together.

A mass children's choir, composed of children from many south side churches, will sing. The youth drama team from River's Edge Community Church will present a brief sketch on unity.

Rev. Jim Willis, now 20-year pastor of North Fayette Baptist Church, will pray for all the ministers attending the service. More than 20 churches will participate.
