The high school soccer season just started and already there have been some stellar matchups, with more to come this weekend.

McIntosh girls have played two games this season, beating Newnan 4-0 and overpowering Stockbridge 15-0. Julie Herdic leads the team and the region in goals scored with six. The Lady Chiefs return nine starters from last year's team, including the entire starting lineup from the regional champion basketball team. McIntosh hosted Lovejoy last night and will face the Fayette County Lady Tigers at Fayette County High School Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Lady Tigers defeated Stockbridge 6-0 Tuesday evening, getting goals from Mandy Kovach, Faith Joslin, Nikkie Senese, Ashley Kirkwood, Rachel Frazier and sarah Oxford. After hosting the Chiefs Saturday, they will face Lovejoy Tuesday. The Lady Tigers also will participate in the Lady Cougar Classic in Newnan beginning next Thursday.

The Lady Cougars notched their first win of the season last Friday with a 3-1 victory over Upson-Lee. Amanda Morton scored the first goal of the game halfway through the first quarter. Sister Edge and Heidi Henkes scored the other goals for Newnan, which outshot Upson-Lee 22-4. The Lady Knights scored their goal off a penalty kick in the first half.

The Fayette County boys team will enter the Cougar Classic again this year. They were the champions of the four-team round robin tournament last year and will get to face the same three teams again this year; Newnan, Vestavia Hills (Ala.) and Gadsden (Ala.).

The Tigers tied with the Starr's Mill Panthers Tuesday night at Fayette County High School. Fayette County scored first, as Charlie Beaubren set up Nick Walloch with a perfect assist. The Panthers equalized the score with a penalty kick.

The Panthers did not get a chance to play Fayette County last year due to unplayable fields. They outshot the Tigers 26-5. Both teams played outstanding defensive matches and played very physically. The Tigers were called for one red and five yellow cards and the Panthers were hit with two red cards. The Tigers will host Upson-Lee Friday at 7 p.m., while the Panthers will play at Rockdale County at 8 p.m. Saturday.
