It seems like it was just yesterday when the local basketball teams were playing in the Thanksgiving tournaments, ready to kick off a new season of high school basketball. The season officially ended for Fayette County teams this weekend as both the McIntosh Lady Chiefs and the Fayette County Tigers were eliminated from the AAAA state tournament.

McIntosh played Northeast Macon, the same team they played and lost to in the opening round of last year's state tournament. Missing several starters, including Melanie Schneider, the Lady Chiefs were forced to play the majority of their team for the entire game.

The two teams battled closely for most of the game, though McIntosh led 20-12 after the first quarter. Their lead was cut to five by the half as Northeast Macon began to disrupt the Lady Chiefs offensive rhythm and momentum. The two teams entered the final quarter tied at 39. Both squads had trouble generating offense, Northeast Macon scored four points to McIntosh's three points in the final eight minutes. The final score was 43-42. Britte Hardy led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 12 points while Jessi Prahl and Stacey Quinn eached chipped in 11.

The Landmark Christian School Lady War Eagles basketball team has advanced to the sweet 16 of the Class A tournament. They defeated Paideia in the region tournament to win their first region championship in school history and to gain entry into the state tournament. The Lady War Eagles faced and defeated Walker on Friday, 49-36.

Freshman Ashley key led Landmark with 23 points, while Brandi Renfro added 10. Defensive standouts for the Lady War Eagles were Ashley Cullop, Rashedah Arnold and Melissa Register. Landmark will play Jefferson this Thursday at 4 p.m. at Floyd College in Rome for the right to advance to the state quarterfinals.

The Fayette County boys basketball team played valiantly on Saturday night against Warner Robins, but lost 59-51. The Tigers got good performances from their team, including William Moore and Rodney Plair, but came up short.
