Lots
to do the weekend after Valentine's Day By MICHAEL BOYLAN Though Valentine's Day was Monday, there are still many ways to show your sweetie that he/she is special. One way is by taking them to an exciting performance or show this weekend. The weekend starts early with a classical music perofmance from oboist Douglas Boyd. Boyd will perform a program of Bach, Ravel, Dorati, Pasculli and Elliot Carter at Spivey Hall Thursday, Feb. 17. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Reed is one of the founders of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 770-961-3683. Spivey hall is on the campus of Clayton College and State University. The Center for the Puppetry Arts promises something new Feb. 17. The center will launch its new show, The Tortoise and the Hare and More. It runs until April 10. The show will feature a collection of Aesop's fables presented in the overt puppetry style. The overt style shows the puppeteers and allows the audience to see how puppetry works. Admission is $8 for adults and $7 for children. Phone 404-873-3391 for showtimes. The Savoyards Musical Theatre Company will get into the action this weekend with its performance of Johann Strauss Jr.'s Die Fledermaus. The operetta will be performed in English at the Robert Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $33.50 and $19 for adults and $11 for children and students. Unicoi State Park and Lodge in Helen will host an outstanding arts and crafts exhibition Saturday and Sunday. It is the 25th year for the annual Fireside Craft/Art Show, which balances traditional folk skills like quilting, spinning and woodcarving, with more contemporary arts such as oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, jewelry and sculpture. The show runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Parking is $2; the show is free. Phone 706-878-2201 ext. 267. The Fayetteville Bluegrass Blast, originally scheduled for Jan. 29 and postponed due to weather, will be this Saturday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at F.A. Sams Auditorium. The event will feature three bluegrass bands; 4 Winds West, steelBlue, and Stoney Gap. The concert is a fund-raiser event for the Fayette County High School Select Chorus and its upcoming trip to England and France. Tickets are $8 and are available at the door. If you purchased tickets for the Jan. 29 show, they will be honored this weekend. Call 770-961-5974 for information. If bluegrass isn't your style, the Michael O'Neal Chamber Singers bring their diverse repertoire to Spivey Hall. The singers may open with Brahms' Liebeslieder Walzer and may close with Cole Porter's Let's Do It. The show will start at 8:15 p.m. and tickets are $15. Phone 770-961-3683 for information.
